The 2016 year in review for The Road to Honey is chock full of recipes for delicious desserts & even a few savory dishes such as Pesto & Ghormeh Sabzi.
Well hello there and Happy New Year. I hope you had a relaxing & peaceful holiday filled with mountains of laughs and lots of tasty treats. The Mr. and I kept it pretty low key this year, opting to stay at home and have some fun around Boston. It was a welcome change as we had spent much of 2016 apart given his assignment in Shanghai. But the good news is he has moved on to a new assignment which, thankfully, will have him based back in Boston. So far his travel schedule has been a bit hectic, but I am optimistic I will have my work out buddy in town more often than out. Fingers crossed for me.
Given his absence and the loss of our little Asia, 2016 was a tough year to say the least. And while I’m optimistic that 2017 will be heading into an upswing, I do foresee a couple of challenges/headaches this year.
As for this little space on the internet, well, I am committed to rolling out the re-design this year and would like to stay in touch with you on a more regular basis. I’m currently in the process of pulling together a plan that will hopefully enable this. I am also committed to continuing to grow my photography and styling skills this year as my numero uno goal is for you to never, ever. . .not in a million years. . . put your mop away because you will need it to wipe the drool up off the floor every time you visit this little space.
And to kick off drool-fest 2017, I have compiled your favorite posts of 2016 in one handy dandy spot (P.S. That top image is a slide show in case you hadn’t discovered it yet).
Pin them to save for later.
You can also pin each recipe individually if you prefer. So get your mop ready. . .and without further adieu. . .
What’s not to love about this beauty. I mean it is a pie stuffed inside a cake, which means you get to enjoy the best of both worlds. Plus, it’s a heavy little number so you get a nice little bicep and glute workout while lifting it out of the oven. Bonus! You can thank me later for helping you get that Kim Kardashian booty in the new year.
I made these whimsical beauties in honor of Asia, our beloved tuxedo cat that passed away this year after a long and heroic battle with cancer. It touches my heart that you guys liked them so much, especially given the personal meaning behind their appearance on this little space. While these certainly are cute on their own, how amazing would they be crowning a birthday cake?
This year I made the decision to focus The Road to Honey’s content on elevated, yet approachable baking. That said, you can still find other types of recipes on the site from earlier days.
This pesto was one of the first things I made in the crappy kitchen in my temporary rental (aka “the cave”). And while that rental didn’t make me feel like I was in a warm and comforting place, this pesto certainly had me feeling like my cooking as as fine as an Italian grandmama.
One thing is for sure, you guys really like pumpkin. Four out of ten of your favorites were pumpkin based, which makes me wonder if I should convert The Road to Honey into a pumpkin only space. I kid. I could never give up on all those other flavor combinations that are just begging to tease your senses. As for this cake, sadly Oreo decided not to bring back the Pumpkin Spice flavor this year, but I think this beauty would be equally delicious with the tried and true original Oreos.
See what I mean! We need to check you guys into a pumpkin rehab center. But I can’t blame you. This exotic twist on a traditional pumpkin pie tastes as stunning as it looks.
The Traditional Basil Pesto was so good (see number 3 above) that I decided to slather it all over some puff pastry & top it with burrata and cherry tomatoes. It’s super tasty for lunch, dinner or served as an appetizer. And aren’t those tomato jewels so pretty? I can’t help but smile every time I look at them.
This beauty went to work with the Mr. where his coworkers daintily plucked the Pocky sticks from the sides of the cake and set them aside before chowing down on this beauty like a pack of wolves. I guess they hadn’t realized that Pocky sticks aren’t hocky sticks and are in fact edible.
Woah! That’s all I can say. You guys really love donuts (and pumpkin. . .but we already covered that), don’t you? When I posted the photo of these beauties, I had people pounding on my door to get the recipe. I feared for my life, so I lickety split and got the recipe up on the blog as quickly as I could. I even tried to get the secret service to guard my door. . .but no can do. Within days I had received many thrilled comments from those who had braved the seemingly terrifying universe of making brioche and whipped up their own batch. I, myself can’t wait to re-make in a wide variety of flavors.
I don’t know if you guys were enamored by this popular Persian dish, or the Mr’s story of his childhood, but rest assured that this Ghormeh Sabzi recipe never disappoints. It’s my personal favorite Persian dish and, from what I hear, is adored by Persians near and far. Just the mere mention of it seems to illicit a twinkle in the eyes of every Persian you meet.
10. Cherry Chocolate Banana Bread with Honeyed Chocolate | PIN IT for later
My magic baking fairies transformed boring old banana bread into this masterpiece, and for many of you, it was love. . .alright. . .lust at first sight. As a matter of fact, word on the street is that many of you were trying to find bootleg ways to turn your bananas into the squishy, ugly ducklings that are needed to make this banana bread the piece of heaven that it is. Oh. . .and you can read how my brand spankin’ new sunglasses where used as a monkey’s chew toy in this post too.
Instagram 2016 Year in Review:
I also started to become a bit more active on Instagram in 2016, so I thought it would be fun to share my top 9 with you.
Many of these you will recognize from the Blog’s 2016 top 10 list but there are a couple of these tasty treats that did not make it onto the list. These are:
- Chocolate Bourbon Pie + Mint & a Brown Sugar Pecan Crust | Instagram – Perfect for the Kentucky Derby or any time you need a chocolate (or bourbon fix).
- Tropical Banana Upside Down Cake | Instagram – Another delicious way to use up the never ending supply of squish bananas we seem to alway find in our house.
- Cherry Galette with Almond Crust | Instagram – One of my personal favorites on the blog. Plus, you get to read about the cute baby orphan elephants being rehabilitated at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Orphanage in Kenya.
- Honey Gingerbread Cookies with Lemon Icing | Instagram – I mean, who can resist a cute gingerbread dude hugging a candy cane?
And I’ve also had some fun creating these stop motion videos:
- Cherry Galette with Almond Crust | Original Post
- Chocolate & Pumpkin Pie Layer Cake | Original Post
- Blueberry Lavender Galette with Pecan Crust | Original Post
Clearly it has been quite a year. And with that, I need to hippety hop and get to whipping up the next generation of treats that will keep that mop of yours busy.
XOXO – Lynn
